Welcome, when I first started reading "Hard Lesson" I thought that you may have hurt yourself or had a close call.
Remember you have 100-120 miles between fill ups. If you don't ride often, get into the habit of checking you tank before the ride. The memory tends to go with age. Don't over fill either. Some people have posted notes about leakage out and over the gas tank.
You know you must have done the right thing if people think it out of charater! Has it changed your son's opinion of 'the old man'?
